Concerts 2009

Winchester Cathedral - 9th May 2009
Conductor: Derek Beck
Soloists: Anna Dennis (soprano), Alex Ashworth (bass), tba - (treble)
Choirs: Twyford Singers, Botley Choral Society, Overton Choral Society, Sarisbury Choral Society

Vaughan Williams: Dona nobis pacem
Karl Jenkins: The Armed Man - a Mass for Peace

Dona nobis pacem sets anti-war poems by the American Walt Whitman together with Biblical texts and lines from John Bright. This 1936 cantata is a perfect partner for Karl Jenkins's Millennium creation which sets alongside the Latin Mass various texts on the subjects of war and peace from sources such as John Dryden, Rudyard Kipling and The Mahabharata. This will be the first full performance of The Armed Man in the Cathedral. Colourful and vivid orchestral sounds will reinforce the drama of these two significant pieces.

Romsey Abbey - 16th May 2009
Conductor: John Sutton
Soloists: Jennifer Shell (soprano), Janet Shell (alto), Paul Badley (tenor), Michael Bundy (bass)
Choirs: Winchester City Festival Choir, Compton & Shawford Festival Choir, Itchen Valley Choral Society

Handel: Judas Maccabaeus

Handel will be celebrated deservedly by all choral enthusiasts throughout the world in the year of the 250th Anniversary of his death. Judas Maccabaeus is a dramatic, some would say almost war-like, oratorio extolling the military virtues of the Israelite leader Judas - the 'conquering hero' of its most famous movement. Elaborate solo arias and stirring choruses are to be expected from this most popular of choral composers.
